This 1,400 square-foot addition to a circa 1960’s track house sits on high ground with a commanding view of the mountains to the east. The program called for a master bedroom suite, a child’s bedroom and a large family room. The owners, a Franco-Japanese couple with impeccable taste trusted the designer to provide a clean, uncluttered space to take in the views and sunlight.
Views and orientation decided the layout. The master bedroom was kept to the back of the house on the west side, where it overlooks the pool and is protected from street noise. The family room capitalizes on the east mountain views and buffers the bedrooms from the street.
The building forms were designed to fit in the scale of the community and yet bring something new. Even the blind side elevation is highly articulated with mitered glass windows and glass blocks to offer a pleasing vista to the adjacent neighbor.
The major materials used on this addition were wood frame construction, steel-troweled stucco, galvanized steel grating, bamboo flooring and anodized aluminum windows and doors.
Project received the Society of American Registered Architects (SARA) Design Award of Honorable Mention, 2004
