Additions to existing buildings by different architects often become conflicting dialogues between the old and new. In this project, the existing became the language from which the new would be generated. The exterior building materials are faithfully reproduced, added new materials are introduced sensitively to respect the existing building and vegetation, and roof slopes are complimentary to the existing structures.

Physically, the 2,600 square foot expansion to the existing center increases the usable area of the facility and provides needed additional meeting and instructional capabilities. The interior of the seminar room is equipped with exhibit cases for local flora and fauna.

The composition of the new additions form a central courtyard flanked by a small amphitheater for instruction and story-telling. A movable shade covering is anticipated to span the courtyard on hot summer days.
