This $450,000 interior renovation encompasses nearly 50,000 square feet of terminal space. The San Diego Unified Port District is envisioning a brand new terminal in the near future and was determined to keep the budget for this interim renovation to a minimum.

The design concept was formulated to manage pedestrian circulation for a population of up to 1,500 passengers! Passengers boarding on the cruise ships required a clear path to the ticket counters, the seating and the eventual departure route. In addition, the existing restrooms were in need of refurbishment.

The solutions to the design issues facing the existing terminal included the addition of directional “sails” delineating the location of the ticket counters, artistic signage in the form of “schooling” fish, designed in collaboration with local graphic designers, and a complete re-design of the existing color scheme. The colors utilized, yellow, blue and white, updates the terminal, reinforce the nautical theme, and lighten up the terminal by reflecting the new Holophane fixtures.
